Curriculum

Midtown Montessori Academy follows the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. As she did, we believe that within each child is the seed of unlimited potential that guides the child into adulthood. We emphasize individualized education as opposed to strict curricular education. In addition, you will find us using many types of curricula to meet the needs of each child.

Child Development

Each child is educated at his or her own rate of development.  Our focus is to help each child develop his or her self through an enriched environment with activities that promote experimentation at every developmental level.  We also actively promote the innate desire to be independent through problem solving, concentration, and self-directed activities in our classrooms.

These goals of nurturing curiosity and independence are balanced with our objective of responsibility and self-discipline. Defined limits and expectations are set through curriculum standards as well as through student codes of conduct and discipline. Generally stated, each child is offered opportunities to learn and explore within the context of respect for themselves, the environment, and the people with which he/she shares the world.  These concepts are the core of Dr. Montessori’s philosophy of education.

Montessori Materials and Classrooms

Using a variety of materials and resources, we support the personalized education of each child with differentiated curriculum and multi-age classrooms. In our program, the child can be enriched both cognitively and socially at the level that is comfortable for him/her. Our Early Childhood Classrooms (ECE) are divided into three communities: Nido (Infant), Toddler, and Primary. MMA’s Sloan’s Lake Campus also houses Lower Elementary and Upper Elementary classrooms. Each community has its own physical, social, psychological, and cognitive goals.  These goals overlap because human development does not always follow a sequential pattern, nor does it proceed at the same rate for each child.  Therefore, the curriculum in each community serves as a guide for each child’s development. Throughout the child’s time in each community, they may move freely throughout the curriculum, regardless of age, while having the necessary materials available at any time to meet their current interests and academic levels.

Through partnership with our families, we work to implement a Montessori curriculum that is authentic and honors the values and culture of each child, creating a safe and welcoming space for children of diverse backgrounds and beliefs. We work to understand each child in a comprehensive manner, including life inside and outside of the classroom, so that we can bring as much of that into our curriculum as possible. We encourage parents to learn about our programs and philosophy, and to become active participants in their child’s education.
